The Chevy Silverado 1500 has long been one of the reigning champs in the full-size pickup category. It consistently delivers some of the best towing and hauling capability in its class and it comes with that handsome Silverado exterior design. When you need even more capability, the Chevy Silverado 2500 HD is a heavy-duty truck with the kind of extra heft you need to take on big-time challenges. Here's a comparison of these two outstanding trucks to help you decide which one is right for you at Roanoke Rapids Auto Group in Roanoke Rapids, NC.
Engines in the Chevy Silverado 1500
The Silverado 1500 offers a number of outstanding engine choices including a turbocharged four-cylinder, two V8 engines and a 3.0-liter Duramax® diesel. The 6.2-liter V8 with 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque is under the hood of the Silverado High Country model and that can take you to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds. Meanwhile, the 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine gives Littleton and Ahoskie drivers 420 pound-feet of torque.
Engines in the Chevy Silverado 2500 HD
The Silverado 2500 HD starts the fireworks off with a standard gas-powered 6.6-liter V8 that's good for 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque. If that's not enough firepower, you can move up to the optional 6.6-liter Duramax® diesel V8 with 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet of torque. Both engines offer Lake Gaston and Rocky Mount buyers rear- or four-wheel drive, compatible with single or dual rear-wheel axles. In addition, both engines are teamed up with an Allison 10 speed automatic transmission.
Towing capacity in the new Chevy Silverado 1500
The maximum towing capacity in the 2024 Chevy Silverado can be as high as 13,300 pounds. Murfreesboro and Henderson customers can reach that level of strength with the 6.2-liter V8 and with the 5.3-liter alternative, towing capacity can go up to 11,500 pounds. If you decide to go with the turbocharged four-cylinder engine, you'll be towing as much as 9500 pounds.
Towing capacity in the new Chevy Silverado 2500 HD
As you'd expect, the Silverado 2500 HD can give you even more towing capacity than the Silverado 1500. With the gasoline-powered model your towing will get up to 17,400 pounds and with the Duramax® diesel your towing can reach a jaw-dropping 36,000 pounds.
Fuel economy
The Duramax® diesel version of the Chevy Silverado 1500 can give you up to 23 MPG in the city and a surprising 33 MPG on Emporia VA highways. The gas-powered turbocharged four-cylinder engine with all-wheel drive is estimated at 20 MPG in the city and 22 MPG on the highway. Even with the 5.3-liter V8 and all-wheel drive you can hit the same 22 MPG on the highway, although city driving drops to 16 MPG. The EPA doesn't provide estimates for heavy-duty trucks but the fuel tank capacity in the Chevy Silverado 2500 HD is 36 gallons and that can take you a long way.
Technology in the Silverado 1500 and the 2500 HD
Both the Chevy Silverado 1500 and the Silverado 2500 HD have touch screen infotainment systems that you can use to manage Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™. The Silverado 1500 has a horizontal 13.4-inch touch screen with advanced features like a Google-powered Voice Assistant and available Amazon Alexa integration. Available safety technology in both trucks includes forward collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, automated emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert and lane-keeping assist.
